We thought it was a bit mean if he didn't get an egg this easter at 2.5years, so as we knew as soon as he saw it he would want to eat it, we bought one of a size we were willing for him to eat a) all in one sitting and b) for breakfast.
He thought it was the bees knees and also got two new books from the Easter Bunny to balance out the experience.
